HIT THE ROAD: 3 DAYS BIKE TOUR FROM BERLIN TO USEDOM

Berlin – Usedom bike road which goes through windmills, cornfields, forests & wheat fields

Last summer, there was a Queen song playing in my head; “I Want To Ride My Bicycle” but not to arrive somewhere specific, just hit the road which takes me through forests, lakes and wonderful villages.

Berlin – Usedom route is the best way to escape from the daily routine and enjoy beautiful landscapes.

If you have the same feeling to start a journey with your bike, keep reading.
I’ll share some tips to push you to hit the road!

The golden rule of this journey is to start the first day as early as possible and show your best performance because in the first morning, unlike the rest of the trip, you have enough sleep, you won’t waste time packing your tent and most importantly your bottom doesn’t hurt.

Secondly; less staff, more kilometers. Unnecessary weight slows you down and sucks your energy, so keep it simple. Tent equipment, a few t-shirts, a towel, a swimsuit, and a jarful peanut butter will do for 3 days.

I also noticed long breaks make me more exhausted, I recommend you to have 15-20 min picnics with fresh fruits in the parks of pretty towns that you pass by. Keep your main dish to eat in camping place to reward yourself.

Water! You’ll notice our body works like a machine and it really needs water when you sweat too much under the midday sun but no worries, there are super sweet and kind local people who are generally taking care of their well-kept garden or walk their dog around the neighborhood that you can feel free to ask for some water and shoot the breeze.

From the first moment we start cycling, I am amazed by bike trails we rode and sunsets we watched in camping places. We always spent nights near a lake because when you finish the day, you might have some muscle pain and the best way to settle your pain is to plunge into freezing water. Another one is making yoga, especially ‘sleeping swan’ pose is very helpful to stretch your upper leg muscles.

When I come back from our trip, my friends asked me many times about ‘How were the roads? Did you ride on the autobahn? Was it dangerous?’
I can say that mostly the roads are separate from the autobahn which goes through windmills, cornfields, forests, wheat fields. Otherwise, there is a bike road parallel to the main road. Whether you are an amateur or a professional rider, you’ll get a kick out of the road.

The Route and Camping Places

The first day, we were a bit on fire, so cycled 102 km from Berlin till Prenzlau. Our plan was spending the other days softer to save time for swimming and sunbathing. You should always have a challenging plan and a ‘Plan B’ against unfavorable possibilities. We completed the halfway the first day to ease the next steps. I suggest you to do the same but if it seems challenging for you, you can extend your trip to 4 days and stay the first night in Joachimsthal.

The second day, after an energizing breakfast we hit the road and arrived 64 km later in Ueckermünde.

The last day was a pushover. First, we took a ferry to cross the small lagoon, Zalew Szczeciński, then reached to Kamminke. You can learn departure times and ticket prices from here.

From Kamminke to Ückeritz the route is around 25 km and passes through the city of Poland, Świnoujście, which gives the feeling that you are getting closer to the sea.  After a few kilometers, you will see people in swimwear walking with their flip flops while eating ice cream. Near Ahlbeck beach, there are lots of elegant restaurants, music, crowd, and vibrant life.

When you reach the final point and hop off your bike, the view of the Baltic Sea which goes like infinity and the soft feeling of white sand is really worthing to your efforts.
To be honest, the time I spent on the road was much better than arriving at the destination. Rain or shine, it is a terrific experience.
